Prior to this week, mapping out Wi-Fi and understanding what constitutes a good user experience wasn't exactly my forte. However, I was faced with the challenge to map out and gather details at one of our sites.
I decided to take the opportunity to learn more. During this experience I was fortunate to utilize a NetAlly AirCheck G3 Pro tester and embark on a journey of Wi-Fi optimization.
Understanding Heatmaps
One of the first steps I took was learning how to leverage Wi-Fi heatmaps. This helps identifying areas with weak signal strength, optimizing access point placement, and ensuring a reliable user experience.
The Setup Process
Using the NetAlly, I started by importing floor plans of the building into the software. These maps were from Google Maps, OpenStreetMaps, or even 2D CAD drawings. Once imported, I measured distances between two points within the plan to ensure accurate scaling during the physical walkthrough.
The Walkthrough
With the NetAlly in hand and the map loaded onto the tester, I began my walkthrough of the site. As I walked, I periodically tapped specific locations on the digital map. With each tap, the NetAlly captured information such as the SSID (network name), BSSIDs (access point identifiers), and real-time signal strength readings.
Analyzing this data later helped with identifying potential coverage gaps and areas of concern, particularly around newly constructed areas. Ensuring strong signal strength in these new attractions is crucial for maintaining a great user experience for our guests.
Beyond Signal Strength: Roaming
Measuring signal strength wasn't the only metric I focused on. I also paid close attention to signal dropouts and roaming behavior. Spending extended periods on a weak signal access point instead of seamlessly roaming to a stronger one can significantly hinder the user experience.
